Dr. Dick Kawooya is an Associate Professor at the School of Information Science, University of South Carolina, specializing in information policy and intellectual property (IP). His research focuses on IP, innovation, and access to knowledge, particularly within Africa’s informal economy. He was Lead Researcher for the African Copyright and Access to Knowledge (ACA2K) Project and contributed to the Open African Innovation Research (Open AIR) project. His current work examines equitable access for students with print disabilities and legal frameworks for knowledge access in the ARIPO region. Dr. Kawooya has consulted for the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), advised on the Marrakesh Treaty, and supports copyright advocacy across Africa. He holds a PhD in Communication and Information from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
